Supplements 1-0-1

Let’s talk about supplements. But first, close your eyes and imagine yourself walking into a GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, or any other supplement store near you. You look to your left and see rows of stocked shelves. You look to the right and see a floor to ceiling display of various protein powders. Then, towards the back is a refrigerated section with drinks, snacks, and more supplements. Overwhelmed? I was the first time I went to purchase a fish oil and saw all of the options for fish oil. There were dirt cheap options and some that seemed overpriced. There were capsules, which I was anticipating, but then there were liquid options! Was I supposed to get the lemon flavored or orange flavored? Arctic cod liver oil or generic? I almost turned around and walked out because I was overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start. 


We get a lot of nutrients from the foods we eat, but there is always a time and place for proper supplementation. And let’s be real, in today’s world we cannot get everything we need from food. So for example, we can obtain magnesium from foods like avocados, nuts and seeds but we can also take a magnesium supplement and reap the benefits. Boosting the brain’s magnesium level is vital to healthy cognition, which includes long- and short-term memory, learning, stress management, and sleep. Taking magnesium an hour before bed can improve sleep quality and I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say no to better sleep.  Magnesium is also great for digestion. Our intestinal walls are relaxed by magnesium which gets things moving through our digestive tract if you know what I mean. Good sleep and a good BM! Sounds like a win-win to me! 


The best piece of advice I can give to someone who wants to take supplements alongside a properly prepared, nutrient dense, whole foods diet, is to always think quality over quantity. You’ll thank yourself for it down your health journey road. Remember that fish oil scenario? Yea, I didn’t choose quality the first or second time. But that’s why I’m here now telling you to quality over everything. Friends don’t let friends take bad supps. Period.
